Project Description: Present statistics show that, on an average, 30 out of every 1000 school going children have hearing problems, which may be temporary or permanent. Children are often labelled as slow learners, Dyslexic, Autistic, or just lazy, when the reason for substandard performance may just be an undetected hearing loss. It is therefore important to diagnose these problems as early as possible to enable immediate intervention, preventing further damage Goals & Objectives of the Project: To test children in schools, pre-schools, and Kindergartens. Screening will also be carried out in city slums as well as, in crèches set up at building sites within the city as well as in Mumbai’s far out suburbs. This is a beginning. Once the project gains further financial support the geographical areas for screening will widen, and we hope to reach out to children in nearby villages in the outskirts of Mumbai as well. Hearing Aid Banks
By supporting this project you will be helping to purchase digital hearing aids, which will be given on loan to deaf children in need until they will be able to collect the money for their own hearing aids. Early intervention and early hearing aid use is so important for deaf children to develop their listening and communication skills in early stages and not loose time. These hearing aids from the hearing aid banks will be also given on loan to deaf children who are cochlear implant candidates to give them the opportunity to develop the skills before they will get their cochlear implant. This will save money to the parents of CI candidates since the children need the hearing aid trial period of the hearing aids for 6 months before the cochlear implant surgery but after the child gets the cochlear implant hearing aid it is not needed anymore. Average price of one good digital hearing aid is about 600 EUR.

Toy Libraries
The toy libraries allow deaf children from socially disadvantaged families to borrow special toys that help to develop hearing, listening, communication and language skills. The toys are also used during the therapies. One whole set of toys for the toy library for each centre costs 500 Eur. The Pink Crocodile supports five centers in India that would like to start the toy libraries. You can support the toy libraries financially or you can choose to donate toys. We would very much appreciate if you donate: musical instruments, music toys, sound toys, vibration toys, different vocabulary picture cards, developmental toys, simple puzzles, narrative books with lots of pictures, hand puppets.
